Dermalux LED light therapy is the buzzword in skin care at the moment, but does the science actually back up the results claimed?
We’ve always been told stay out of the sun but the newest in skin care innovation, LED light therapy, seems to challenge that wisdom. LED light therapy involves using different wavelengths of non-harmful light to regenerate and heal the skin and the results following a course of treatment are impressive.
The Dermalux basically involves lying under a space age, curved lamp that shines rows of tiny LED lights onto your skin. The sensation is not dissimilar to lying on the beach on a beautiful, warm sunny day.
There are three different colours of LED lights, each with different wavelengths which are absorbed by different layers of the skin. Each colour of light has different healing properties: blue is anti-bacterial so perfect for acne, red light has a rejuvenating and anti-inflammatory effect and boosts hydration, whilst near infrared light is the most deeply absorbed wavelength and helps promote the production of collagen to counteract skin damage and visible signs of aging.
The regeneration benefits of LED lights was actually discovered by NASA. After each space mission completed, NASA noticed that small injuries just weren’t healing until the astronauts landed back on earth. It was discovered that human cells need gravity to regenerate and heal. A solution was needed so NASA began to experiment.
In 2002, a study was published which proved that LED lights stimulate the basic energy processes in each cell, particularly when near-infrared light is used.
NASA experimented with varying wavelengths to see if the lights could help encourage skin regeneration to heal wounds. Turns out it worked, and the results were pretty impressive. In a single application of the LED lights, using a combination of the three wavelengths, DNA synthesis or cell regeneration increased five-fold!
NASA’s results were clear but it wasn’t till 2013 that a study was completed that assessed the use of LED lights in stimulating, healing and restoring the skin.
The study proved that the light from the LEDs is absorbed by skin cells increasing nitric oxide release in the skin. Although nitric oxide is a toxic, free radical pollutant in the earth’s atmosphere, it plays a vital and useful role in the skin. It helps reduce inflammation and promotes wound healing, as well as encourages the skin cells to close up when exposed to damaging UVB rays.
The study also showed that oxygen and blood flow in the skin cells increased, as well as the amount activating skin cells required for repair and healing. This combination proved to be beneficial on a whole host of skin problems including wrinkles, acne scars and rosacea and even helped heal burns, scars and stretch marks.
A Dermalux treatment lasts up to 20 minutes and can utilise one, two or all three of the different wavelengths, depending on which layer of skin you want to target. In order to get the very best results, it’s important to have a course of frequent LED light treatments of all three wavelengths, targeting different layers of skin. A recommended course is 10 treatments (2-3 treatments weekly).
After the initial course is done and dusted, you only need to maintain the treatment every few months, just to give your skin a little encouragement to increase its level of regeneration. Although, as LED light therapy is completely non-invasive, you can keep having the treatments regularly, whenever you need an extra boost of brightness or a breakout suddenly appears.
It may seem far too early to even consider it but now really is the best time to get ready for Summer with IPL Hair Removal.
Many of us are fed up having shaving and waxing to get rid of unwanted hair. IPL is a method of semi-permanent hair removal which is becoming more and more popular. Shaving and waxing simply remove hair from the surface of the skin whereas IPL treatments use focused light energy to destroy the hair at the follicles. Here are some common questions asked.
How many IPL treatments will I need?
It is important to note that complete hair removal is very unlikely in a single treatment. Typically most clients require around six treatments however this is dependent on the colour of your hair, thickness of your hair and colour of your skin. IPL targets hair in the active growth phase and you should expect hair reduction of around 10 – 25 percent per treatment. IPL works by transmitting energy across the skin and the energy is absorbed by the pigments in the hair shaft and transmitted down to the follicle. What this means is that the IPL targets the pigment. We find that IPL is most effective on clients with dark hair and light skin. This is one of the reasons why we recommend having IPL treatments in the winter months when hair is less likely to be bleached by the sun and skin is less likely to be tanned.
How long do results of IPL last?
We refer to IPL as a semi-permanent hair removal treatment as although the initial course of treatments will remove all of your hair follicles your body will eventually produce and develop more.
Many companies often describe IPL as a method of permanent hair removal leaving clients disappointed when around a year after the initial course of treatments their hair begins to grow back. We find that clients typically require a ‘top-up’ treatment once every six to twelve months. Your therapist will advise when your next top up treatment is needed.
Am I suitable for IPL?
Although IPL is most effective on those with light skin and dark hair pretty much anyone can have IPL hair removal. As IPL targets the pigment completely white hair can be difficult to treat. Typically we find that the lighter the hair colour the more treatment sessions are required. When considering the skin, we want the energy to be absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles, not the pigment in the skin, so we have to change the energy levels in darker skin types, so dark skin types may also require more sessions to get a good result. So all in all anyone can have the IPL hair reduction but you may require additional treatments.
How should I prepare for treatment?
Limit your sun exposure.
We always advise to have no sun exposure for a minimum of 2 weeks prior to your treatment. Most of us with ‘Irish skin’ tend to burn in the sun. But all of our skin, even those lucky ones who tan well, can become much more sensitive to heat (from sun exposure) without us even knowing it! If you were out in the sun before your IPL treatment you would run the risk of scarring, burning or seriously damaging your skin. As a result we would not be able to perform the treatment.
Limit your use of self-tanners
As IPL targets dark pigment we also ask that you limit your use of self-tanners prior to your IPL treatments. Fake-tan can cause the IPL to target the ‘fake’ pigment on your skin rather than the hair follicle. Not only will this make the treatment less effective but it could potentially damage your skin. If you use fake-tan prior to your treatment we will not be able to perform the IPL treatment.
Refrain from plucking, waxing or bleaching the area.
Before your IPL hair reduction treatment we ask that you refrain from plucking or waxing the area to be treated for at least 2 – 4 weeks. We also ask that you do not bleach the hair. Plucking, waxing and bleaching reduces the effectiveness of the treatment. If you do pluck, wax or bleach the IPL treatment will not be as effective and you will require additional treatments.
Shave the treatment area.
If you do want to get rid of unwanted hair in between treatments, shaving is absolutely fine. In fact we ask that you shave the area to be treated a day or two prior to your treatment. When IPL hair reduction is performed the hair follicles should be visible however if longer hair is visible it could be slightly more painful. At Renaissance our aestheticians are expertly trained so if they find that the hair is too long they will shave the area.
What should I expect from the treatment?
Before your treatment begins we will clean the treatment area to ensure there are no lotions, cosmetics or deodorants left on the skin. You will be given a pair of protective eye wear and we will apply a cool gel to the area to be treated. The treatment involves a number of applications called ‘pulses’ to be applied to the area. It is not a painful treatment and many clients describe the sensation as a ‘pinch’ or a ‘flick’.
What kind of aftercare does IPL require?
After your IPL treatment there is no downtime and you can continue your normal activities after treatment. However as your skin is likely to be sensitive we recommend using an SPF on sun exposed areas. Excessive skin exposure after treatment risks damaging your skin so we advise that you avoid sunbathing or tanning beds.
After your treatment the targeted hair will look like it’s growing again. This is when the hair begins to make its way out of the follicle. Around two weeks after your IPL treatment your hair will shed and fall out. At this time you will be able to gently remove it with a washcloth in the bath or shower. When your hair is shedding, let it fall out naturally. Please do not pluck or wax the treatment area! If the hair has not fallen out naturally it means that the root is still alive and that the hair will need to be targeted again in another treatment. You can shave after your IPL treatments but avoid any treatments that pulls hair out by the roots.

So what’s all the fuss about?
Micro Needling is an all-round amazing treatment. A favourite among celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Kim Kardashian, it caters to a multitude of skin concerns and is safe for any skin type. If you suffer from acne scarring, enlarged pores, fine lines or wrinkles, this is the ideal treatment for you!
The science behind it..
The best part about Medical Micro Needling is that your own body does all the work. There is the dermal roller and the Dermapen which penetrates your skin on different levels, and creates micro injuries to the skin. This kick-starts your body into repair-mode, triggering the production of collagen and elastin. More collagen and elastin means smoother, more refined, tighter skin, and who wouldn’t want that?
Does it hurt?
The term itself “micro needling” may sound a little scary! But rest assured a numbing cream is used on your skin before your treatment so you feel no/ minimal pain and discomfort. After your treatment, you can expect some redness and sensitivity for a few hours, and some flaking for up to a week. This is all part of the healing process.
We recommend a course of 3-5 treatments, 3 weeks apart for best results.

Platelet Rich Plasma aka The Vampire Facelift treatment, you can rejuvenate your skin naturally. It is the most natural and safest yet effective treatment available on the aesthetic market right now to rejuvenate the skin especially the under eye area.
With celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Angelia Jolie, Kylie Minogue, and teh gorgeous Vogue Williams devoted to PRP due to effectiveness, naturalness and minimal downtime it is no wonder we had to make this treatment available to you.
Platelet Rich Plasma treatment uses a purified and concentrated portion of your own blood to rejuvenate your facial skin. The treatment involves harvesting platelets from your own blood; therefore the first step is to extract a minimal amount of blood. This is then placed in a centrifuge to spin it down separating the red blood cells from the platelet rich plasma. These platelets contain a high content of “growth factors” – are injected into the skin, which ignite tissue regeneration, stimulate collagen production and also help to heal injured tissue or damaged skin.
Vampire Facelift can be used to treat the face, neck, hands and all over the body with excellent results: skin is re-plumped and rejuvenated; fine lines and wrinkles are reduced and skin contours are redefined to create a youthful, radiant glow. It is hugely successful in the treatment of areas such as, crow’s feet, sunken eyes, acne scars, and wrinkles, fine lines around nose, lips and neck area.
As PRP treatment uses your own blood, it contains no foreign or synthetic chemicals and therefore has no side effects. The rend result is 10-15% more volume in the skin. Treatment results continue to improve over a period of 6-12 weeks, and it is recommended that 3 treatments are done in total 6-9 months apart.
The downtime is fairly minimal, slight puffiness. However if treating the eyes, there may by some swelling and bruising.
This treatment is done by our nurse Deirdre Power.
She is a big fan of this treatment and is a great client of ours. She was kind enough to let us take pictures of her getting this treatment done in our clinic.
It’s no secret that Photoshop is used to make celebrities and cover models flawless. For most it can hide a multitude of sins, but more often then not the technique is used for hiding acne and acne scarring. Celebrities such as The Kardashians, Britney Spears and many more have all been airbrushed to within an inch of their life but in truth have been faced with adult acne, a condition that can affect both male and female, all skin types and ages, although generally begins during puberty.
In reality us mere mortals can’t hide behind photo shopping so what is the answer?
Acne can vary from person to person and accordingly so can the treatment. Often a combination of treatments are used together to actively manage your Acne, along with an appropriate homecare regime to enhance and maintain results.
IPL Treatments can provide an effective acne treatment, as well as a permanent solution to acne scarring. IPL treatments utilise a high intensity light source to penetrate through the tissue and destroy acne bacteria quickly and easily. Typically, just 4 -6 treatments over a two month period will greatly improve the appearance of skin as well as evening out skin tone and producing collagen.
Resurfacing Treatments/ Skin Peels
AHA peels can be very helpful in treating acne, especially as a part of an overall acne management program. AHA peels work by exfoliating the upper layers of the skin, and removing debris and irritants from the skin. This improves the skin and increases cell turnover. AHA peels also stimulate new collagen formation and improve acne scarring.
Acne scars are most often the product of an inflamed lesion. The greater the inflammation on the skin, the more likely scarring is to occur. Deep breakouts that take a long time to heal also increase the chance of scarring. Medical microneedling is a treatment that safely and effectively treats Acne Scarring. It stimulates the skin, encouraging the production of new collagen and elastin which enables it to regenerate and repair itself.
It is important to combine your treatment with a suitable home skincare plan to enhance and maintain results. The Image Clear Cell line can treat oily problem skin, and non- inflamed acne or inflamed acne. The products are based on salicylic acid to purify and reduce inflammation in the skin. The medicated line also contains benzyl peroxide which will treat infected pustular skin.
Tips for Acne Management
Once you have started your treatment plan and are following a suitable homecare regime there are also a few tips that are important to remember to keep Acne at bay.
- Zinc is one of the best vitamins that you can take for acne, as it helps to reduce the
formation of free radicals under your skin. If you have cystic acne and want to reduce the bumps on your face, try taking a zinc supplement once a day to destroy your acne from the inside out.
- Keep yourself hydrated to help with acne breakouts. Try to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to maintain clear skin. Water flushes out the toxins in your body, which also includes your skin. It will allow your skin to retain the correct amount of moisture and give it a healthier glow.
- Also clean your makeup brushes regularly and throw out all of your old makeup. Old makeup and dirty brushes can add dirt and bacteria to your face that can cause blemishes and blackheads. Anything that touches your face should be fresh and clean.
- Don’t squeeze or pick. It’s important to adopt a strict “hands off” policy when it comes to acne. Picking can lead to more inflammation and permanent scarring.
- As part of your skincare routine try to include salicylic acid. This component destroys the bacteria that you can get during the course of the day, and prevents free radicals from forming. Using a cleanser with salicylic acid can help control your oil level and reduce the chance for severe acne formation.

Repairing wrinkles and other signs of aging have certainly come a long way in the last twenty years. Years ago, the only way to gain a youthful appearance was to undergo a face lift or have some other kind of painful cosmetic surgery. Now, it’s as simple as having a substance injected into the tiniest of wrinkles and you can instantly gain a more youthful appearance without having invasive surgery and having to endure a long healing period. Dermal Fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance essential to the skin maintaining a youthful and refreshed look.
In Renaissance Clinic, we use Emerval, Perfectha and Restylane. These are the top 3 Hyularonic Acid Dermal Fillers and are all made from non-animal fats and need no pre-testing before use.
Hyaluronic acid is present in all living organisms including your skin and is what creates volume in the skin giving it a healthy appearance. The injections contain Hyaluronic acid which when injected lifts the skin before working with the body’s natural Hyaluronic acid to create volume in the skin.

A thread lift is a minimally invasive cosmetic enhancement technique that lifts sagging skin on the face and neck using surgical suture threads. A thread lift is not a substitute for a facelift but it does provide modest and subtle changes rather than dramatic results.
There is very little downtime, with no visible scar, these are the main advantages of this one hour procedure.
It is common to combine a thread lift with other non-invasive procedures such as anti-wrinkle injections, laser treatments and facial peels that help improve skin texture
Why Choose to have thread lifting?
People choose to have a thread lift to reduce signs of premature ageing, especially sagging skin on the face and neck.
You are a good candidate for the procedure if:
- You are in your 30s, 40s & early 50s. People of 55 and over can be candidates as long as their skin has not become too lax.
- You want to improve your looks by enhancing and highlighting features lost to premature ageing, improving sagging or loose skin on your face and neck.
- The changes you see in your face and not enough for a full face lift.
- You are not expecting dramatic changes, but subtle ones.
What to expect
- A thread lift is classified as a non-invasive treatment and the procedure takes around an hour to complete.
- The thread lift procedure involves making small incisions in key locations, most often along the hairline, and inserting a threaded needle under the skin to anchor both ends to lift and suspend the skin. The nurse/doctor assesses each patient and usually between 4 and 16 threads will be used.
- Thread lifting is a relatively new procedure and Renaissance is the first clinic in Ireland to perform this procedure. There may be some level of discomfort during the treatment. Swelling and bruising around the area is quite common after the procedure. This will gradually subside.
Before the procedure
Before the procedure and you will be asked to stop taking certain types of medications, such as aspirin, which can disrupt the healing process.
After the procedure
After the lift, threads take a few weeks to settle into place and integrate properly with the skin. You will be provided with postoperative instructions that you must follow to the letter to reduce the risk of complications during your period of recovery.
These may include:
- Limiting laughing for the first 24 hours following the procedure, allowing the skin to heal faster.
- Avoid chewing anything during the first 24 hours. You should stick to soft foods and liquids for as much as seven days.
- Keep your head elevated during the first day to reduce swelling.
- It will be safe to resume light activities within a couple of days. You can get back to all normal activities within a week.
- Try to avoid social situations in the first week. It is best if you can stay away from weddings, parties and other intense occasions for about three weeks.
- Avoid facial massages for about three weeks.
Great skincare for men doesn’t have to be wrought with expensive lotions and creams. Get the basics right though and you will have fewer breakouts, shaving will be easier, skin less irritated and inflamed with less ingrown hairs, and most importantly you can protect your skin and prevent premature aging.
So here’s our top five skincare tips for men, and if you or your other half would like more information call us on 018063200 or use our online booking form to book you free consultation and skin scanning.
1. Avoid Hot showers and use a good cleanser
Guilty of taking hot showers and using harsh soaps or face scrubs? Your skin will instantly become dry with this routine so try using a gentle cleanser that will remove the dirt and oil that can accumulate, and hydrate at the same time. Remember, if you don’t cleanse your skin on a daily basis; the excess grime and oil could also leave you with clogged pores and breakouts.
2.Prepare your skin for Shaving
Shave in the shower or immediately afterwords, as the facial hairs are much softer from the warm water and steam. Apply a light layer of foaming cleanser to keep the skin moist and warm and provide an extra barrier while shaving.
3.Soothe Skin post shave
The Ormedic Balancing Antioxidant serum is a soothing, post- shave hydrator. This product especially appeals to men because it’s lightweight and doesn’t leave the skin feeling sticky or greasy. As men tend to have oily skin, it will also help to balance out their oil production. This serum has very little scent, and only 2-4 drops are needed for the entire face and neck.
4.Moisturise Daily Skin care for most men starts and stops with a basic bar of soap or cleanser. Combine that with dry skin after a hot shower or rough shave and your skin will be crying out for some moisture.
A moisturiser will help to replenish your skin’s moisture content and will help prevent razor burn. Choose a moisturiser that contains SPF to help protect you from exposure to the sun’s damaging rays. Unprotected sun exposure can lead to pre-mature aging, fine lines, wrinkles and worst of all, skin cancer.
Protect your skin daily with an IMAGE daily skin moisturiser formulated for your skin type. For example, if like most men you have oily skin, choose the daily matte moisturiser which contains microsponge technology to absorb surface oils and leaves skin with a matte, shine-free finish.
Exfoliation removes the top layer of skin and unblocks your pores – for the uninitiated, this translates as fewer spots and ingrown hairs.
The total resurfacing masque can be used to help clear up blackheads, minimise the appearance of pores, dry up the occassional acne spot, and even lighten hyperpigmentation. If you shave in the morning use this product at night to prevent irritation and vice versa.
